What do you learn about in First grade reading?
I was wondering what you learn about in First Grade reading.. I am tourtering a little first grade boy in reading and I need to know what First Graders learn in FIrst grade reading.. Thanks!
First graders learn a lot in first grade reading:
1) They do a review of the basic letter sounds a-z
2) Then they start doing the digraphs: sh, ch, wh and th. They start combining these to make basic words: like shut, or that.
3) Then they add in the long vowel sounds. This is very tricky for a lot of first graders. They learn the a_e, etc. patterns first like in the word cake, bite, Pete. These words can be taught as the 'e' is very bossy and he tells the vowel to say his own name and then he is silent. After this, they learn all the long vowel combinations like ai, ay, etc.
4) Toward the end of the year, they learn the 'r' controlled sounds and letter combinations like ar, ir, er, or, oo.
5) Throughout the year, a very important thing that they learn are sight words. In my district, first graders learn 230 sight words over the course of the year. These are words they can't sound out, they just have to memorize them. There is the Dolch sight word list (spelling?), or check with the child's teacher to see what sight word list they are using. Sight words are great done with flash cards. But don't do all 200 at once! Take a few. Master those. Add a few more. Go back and review, etc.
6) Students continue with all these sounds and sight words to build fluency (reading quickly and accurately). They should be able to read 60 words in one minute by the end of first grade. This would be good thing to monitor with your tutee. Once a week, time them reading a passage for one minute and see how they are doing.
7) And, don't forget comprehension (understanding of the story). Make sure the student can identify who is in the story. What are the characters doing? Where are they, etc.? This is a great gateway skill for tougher comprehension ahead in 2nd and 3rd grade.
I hope this helps! Good luck!!!
