Summer Reading

Keeping Kids Busy – Summer Reading Programs

I know it may be difficult to get children to read during the summer, but it is important to keep them in the habit of reading.  Following are some reading programs available.  Most public libraries have some kind of summer reading program, so I would suggest checking with your local library.

Participation is fun and an easy way for kids to earn free books. They simply read any eight books – library books, books borrowed from friends or books bought at Barnes & Noble – write about their favorite part, and bring a completed tear page to a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Children then choose their free book from a list of paperback titles.
Our 2010 program features Scholastic’s best-selling multi-media adventure series ‘The 39 Clues®’. Authors Rick Riordan, Gordon Korman, Peter Lerangis, Jude Watson, Patrick Carman, Linda Sue Park, and Margaret Peterson Haddix will make appearances at select stores across the country, and will also participate in a Summer Reading blog at Barnes  & Noble. The free program kicks off in Barnes & Noble stores across the country May 25 and continues through September 6. Teachers, parents and children can download the Summer Reading materials for free at www.bn.com/summerreading.

Imagination Library
In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort to benefit the children of her home county in east Tennessee. Dolly wanted to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families. She wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.

So she decided to mail a brand new, age appropriate book each month to every child under 5 in Sevier County. With the arrival of every child’s first book, the classic The Little Engine That Could ™, every child could now experience the joy of finding their very own book in their mail box. These moments continue each month until the child turns 5—and in their very last month in the program they receive Look Out Kindergarten Here I Come.

I love reading, and especially to sit outside in the summer with a good book. I am not picky, I will read fiction, non fiction, biographys, memiors, poetry, anything and everything. I just need suggestions on good books to read, and if they are unusual, where to get them?
