What’s the point of ‘Baby on Board’ signs in cars? Surely we should drive safely all the time?
In todays view, they are more of a novelty gift given to new parents.
From what I’ve heard concerning their origin (and from the PR and advertising when they first became available in the US) is that someone took the concept of the “Tot Finder” stickers offered by the fire depts back in the 1970′s for parents to place on their child’s bedroom window so in the event of a fire, the fire fighters would know that bedroom was a child’s room. Then whenever rescue personnel sees the “Baby/Child On Board” in the window of a car, they knew to look for an infant or small child in the wreckage.
If an infant or child is not in the car, then it should be removed during that time. This can cause unnecessary endangerment to rescue personnel on a wreck scene taking the additional time looking for an infant/child when all along, they were taken to the babysitter by the other parent that day in their car.
