how to go about learning a guitar riff?

so when im trying to learn fast guitar riffs is it better to play all the notes right and go very slow and work up or to try to play it as fast as i can and miss a few notes?

You absolutely should slow it down and learn the notes, or else they'll be wrong.

But here's what I think is most important, you need to play in rhythm and up to speed with the song.

Think about it, if you play every note perfectly, but you have no rhythm, even an idiot can tell that something is off.

BUT, if you have perfect rhythm, and you're grooving with the song, and you throw a few bum notes in there, you'll be fine, because eventually you'll come back to the right notes, and you never lost the rhythm to begin with!
