You Say
What does it actually mean if you say ‘Yes, I Care About That’?

Someone once challenged me about this. He said ‘If you REALLY care about it you’d be doing something about it’ (Whatever ‘it’ is). So the question is, if you say you CARE about something, (anything) is the evidence for this your actions regarding rectifying the issue -or isn’t that necessary? Please give your reasons…

Was this challenger me?

Whoever they are, they are onto something. Not doing what you claim to advocate doesn’t necessitate that you are a liar or hypocrite. What it is is a good rule of thumb. I have argued with so many people claiming that they think that the government should be put in charge of taking care of the poor, when they themselves have done nothing to help the poor. If they did do something to help the poor then whatever it is that they did would seem more effective or virtuous to them than would state intervention. It being structured as you have it doesn’t necessarily point to a contradiction, but it often does (such as in the example I provided).

An extension of this distinction we are talking about is something that I have noticed is a very useful. It’s like living that old cliche “actions speak louder than words”. I would go even further and say that only actions speak (obviously there are exceptions, but exceptions aren’t the rule).

Evidence informs logic. If you were to come about the conclusion that a person does think that the poor should be helped then it is WAY more convincing to me when they have done something toward this goal beyond saying it’s right or effective.

I don’t believe people when they say they care about something. I can’t. If what they cared about was demonstrated via their endorsement, like “I care about communicating with people” (not the best example I know), then it is through the action of communicating that you are most convinced.

I don’t think it’s a good use of anyone’s time to point out exceptions to a rule unless it necessitates that the rule is invalid. To me it’s like an agnostic telling me “well you haven’t accounted for ALL of the definitions of god before saying god doesn’t exist”. I am so annoyed by that.

I’m a little buzzed so if I am being tangential then please forgive me.
