What does the information come from in living organisms?
I was wondering… where does the information come from, for example, when a caterpillar is just a caterpillar, but when it turns into a butterfly it flies? Where does the information come from telling it to fly suddenly? If they aren’t taught to fly, where does the information come from telling them to do it?
Most of the information is contained in the DNA of the organism. That determines what proteins get built by cells, what kinds of cells get produced in different parts of the body, what hormones get secreted including hormones that control the timing of other hormones, what physical structures get built, and the timing of the construction of those structures. The developmental stages that a butterfly goes through in its lifespan are just like the developmental stages of a frog, or of a human embryo.
You can think of it like the long execution of a computer program playing out in a certain sequence that can take weeks, months, or even (in the case of large mammals like us) years.
I say *most* of the information is in DNA, but not all of it. Some information is derived from the environment. The organism gets information from daylight about the daily day-night cycle. From temperature it knows the seasons. Or a new stage may be triggered when the food gets exhausted, which itself can be related to DNA playing out in other organisms.
For example, in my garden I have gulf fritillary butterflies that feed only on passionflowers. The flowers have their own life-cycle of flourishing, flowering, and then going dormant. The flowers are attract the butterflies who lay their eggs on the plant, which hatch into caterpillars and strip the leaves bare. When their food is exhausted, this triggers the caterpillars to go into their chrysalis phase, which hatches a new butterfly,and the cycle continues. My point is that the lifecycle of one species acts as timing “information” for the other species.
The information that tells the butterfly how and when to fly is also contained in the DNA, which determines the hard wiring of the nervous system of the butterfly. A butterfly no more need to be “taught” how to fly, than human babies need to be “taught” how to breathe or how to cry. It is an involuntary coordination of nerves and muscles, although the individual can learn to voluntarily control it.
