Honestly depends on what you like.
Personally I like 2003′s Crispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi, a historical fiction. Also 1944′s Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes isn’t a bad historical novel.
If you are looking for fantasy I’d probably say 1985′s The The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley or 1976′s The Grey King by Susan Cooper
Humor: 1999′s Holes by Louis Sachar
Distopian: 1994′s Giver by Lois Lowery
Mystery: 1979′s Westing Game by Ellen Raskin
“Just plain weird”: 2009′s The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Animal tale: 2004′s The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo
