Why is Harry Potter referred to as a half blood?
I thought to be a half blood you had to have one muggle parent. His parents were both wizards as they met at Hogwarts. Ok so his mum came from muggle parents but she was a witch so that makes Harry pure blood. How far back does the magic need to go in generations to make you a pure blood?
A half-blood is defined as a witch or wizard with at least one wizarding parent and at least one Muggle parent or grandparent. Some half-bloods like Voldemort or Snape have one parent that is a witch and the other is a Muggle. But, if you’ll recall from the graveyard scene in Goblet of Fire, Voldemort refers to Lily Potter as a Muggle. That is because pureblood fanatics like the Death Eaters don’t consider Muggle-born witches and wizards any better than Muggles. So, even though Lily was a witch, to them Harry is a half-blood because her parents were Muggles. J.K. Rowling answered this question on her official website, when a fan asked: “Why are some people in the wizarding world (like Harry) called ‘half-blood’ even though both of their parents are magical?”
JKR: “The expressions ‘pureblood’, ‘half-blood’ and
‘Muggle-born’ have been coined by people to whom these distinctions matter, and express their originators’ prejudices. As far as someone like Lucius Malfoy is concerned, for instance, a Muggle-born is as ‘bad’ as a Muggle. Therefore, Harry would be considered only ‘half’ a wizard because of his mother’s parents.
If you think this is far-fetched, look at some of the real charts that Nazis used to show what constituted ‘Aryan’ and ‘Jewish’ blood. I saw one in the Holocaust Museum in Washington when I had already devised the ‘pure-blood’, ‘half-blood’ and ‘Muggle-born’ definitions, and was chilled to see that the Nazis used precisely the same warped logic as the Death Eaters. A single Jewish grandparent ‘polluted’ the blood according to their propaganda.”
