Classics Charles
Why is reading (classics, essays, etc) important?

And is ‘The Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin a classic?

Reading anything is important because it increases your knowledge of the world.

I don’t think reading the ‘classics’ is something someone necessarily ‘has’ to do, but they have become ‘classics’ for a reason. They were popular in their time, and are still popular a hundred years or more later because there is something in them that touches people.

Reading classics helps you learn about another time period whithout slogging through dry nonfiction. You get to examine other people’s points of view on different subjects, you get to see how other people live, you get to go places in a book you may never get to travel to in real life.

Essays do the same thing. They broaden your horizons and open you up to things you may never have considered or thought about before.

I don’t think “Origins” is a classic in the sense of literature (although others may disagree) but it is certainly a classic in the science world.
