Another question for anyone who has read the story of Rip van Winkle?
Irving was a Romantic, but he was also a satirist. What elements of this story – including the narrator’s commentaries – are satirical? Who or what are Irving’s targets?
Irving is a Transcendentalist which does fall into the category of Romanticism… so you are correct. but Romanticism does not mean it was about love or whatever… what they did was define literature as fiction and explore the emotions and moral issues of the character. This also includes satyre as well. I guess Irving satirizes American society through Rip van Winkle. There are those who work hard in their life and get far in contrast with those who don’t and life passes them by without them noticing: this is seen through Rip van Winkle.. hope this helps. ^-^
