Hello. I’m interested in becoming a freelance proof reader/ copy editor. Can anyone recommend any agencies?
I haven’t completed a course in this field but have bought a book which tells you the tricks of the trade. Does anyone know of any small freelance agencies which may be recruiting somebody with no prior experience? I have a BA Honours in Art so that is my specialist field but I would like to perhaps help school children or foreign students with their work.

As a professional copyeditor, I can tell you that the skills learned at editing courses are immensely valuable, and the networking opportunities are even more so. Being able to show potential clients that you have a mastery of editing skills will be a huge boon to your career. Telling them that you read a book about editing is not going to get you any jobs.
It’s almost impossible to break into freelancing with no prior experience, because you don’t have any contacts to start your client base and you don’t have any successes to advertise yet. You might want to consider starting your career by taking a proofreader/editor position at an organization (not necessarily a publishing house – many corporations and non-profits, even government entities, need editorial support). Many companies will pay for you to attend skills classes and workshops. When you have experience under your belt, you will be much more successful as a freelancer.
Also, I am not aware of any editing jobs that involve helping children with their homework – that’s more of a tutoring job. Professional freelance editors are generally tasked with proofing/editing documents that are eventually intended for publication (that’s why someone is willing to pay to have them edited, after all), not with correcting the misspellings in someone’s book report. If that’s the career you’re really interested in, contact some schools in your area and see if they need tutors or work with any programs that provide them.
