Dunnottar Castle, Aberdeenshire
This castle stands on remote cliffs that look like they were made just for this castle. There are only two ways into this castle, and neither way is good for unwanted guests. Fortunately, visitors are welcome and entrance is easy--and the views are breathtaking. The present structure dates all the way back to the 1500s. Talk about a history lesson waiting to happen! Admission is only £3.50 for adults and £1.00 for children.
Puffin Watching - Coastal Cliffs Scotland
For all those bird watchers, this is a nice side trip. Handa Island is a privately owned and is accessible by boat. It only costs £10, and conservation volunteers look after the site. They will give you information but you are basically left alone to look at birds and wander around the cliffs. There is also an abandoned village you can look at while getting dive-bombed by skuas.
Deer Abbey, Aberdeenshire
The ruins of Deer Abbey were set up by the monks from Kinloss. The site's claim to fame came from the Book of Deer, which can now be found in the Fitzwilliam Museum Library in Cambridge. Admission to the abbey is free, making this a must-see for all travelers to Scotland.
Dunbar Castle, Lothian
Some say this was once the finest castle in all of Scotland. The castle fell into the sea in 1993 and all that is left is its remains. However, there is enough left of the castle to make it worth stopping by. There is no public access allowed, but passing up what used to be the finest castle is Scotland would be a travesty.
