SO much changed…
As a fan of the “Percy Jackson & The Olympians” books I was disappointed that the movie changed so much of the plot and left out key details. The movie was much more superficial and lacked the inventive interweaving of myths with modern society. The film had good parts and I’m glad I went to see it, but I’m not going to be shouting it’s praises from any rooftops. Reasons why negative and positive (and spoilers) below.
Percy and Grover were both good looking mainstream kids and not dorky, different, or interesting. Grover was chasing after girls in bikinis for half the movie. As a woman I was insulted. There were way too may boobs in this movie period.
There was no Half-Blood Hill or huge pine tree. The cabins were not in a U shape and each uniquely different. I was looking forward to that part. Percy was told he was the son of Poseidon right off the bat. There was no mention of Clarisse or the great prophecy. Annabeth and Luke backstory nowhere to be seen. All the demigods kind of blended together. Also Percy didn’t learn to fight – he just kind of did it out of the blue. No blue candy either, which the prop person could have put in easily for the book fans.
The gods and goddesses looked dated which is something the author of the books moved away from, but here they were back in the typical togas. There was a new rule of how the gods and goddesses couldn’t speak to their children, so it took the choice away from them which pacified them. And of course there was a complete change of plot. Percy and Luke flying shoe battle? WTF?
Good notes were a few light hearted moments. (It’s high school without the musical. LOL.) The camp wasn’t how I pictured it, but was still pretty cool to see with the forest, training stuff, and sea. I liked the casting for Annabeth and Percy was okay. Both need more depth, yet I can live with it. Nice to see imagination rather then the same old stuff.
Although it wasn’t perfect (by a long shot) I still think it’s worth watching. Who knows, maybe they will listen to the fans and the squeal will be better. Peace.
