As adults we believe every child has the right to aspire to be the very best they can. We like our children to be happy, confident, enthusiastic and highly motivated to strive to their best potential!!  We as parents, teachers, role models and councilors can often find it difficult to infuse theses elements into a child. Angela Buck is the author of "The Magic Sunglasses" and founder of "The Magic Sunglasses Project", she has a keen interest in how the right self development can increase self worth and really improve quality and enjoyment of life, especially in children. With this in mind, she has expanded this ethos through her book and is now developing even more interactive concepts for children worldwide.

The Magic Sunglasses is a fun fantasy book for 7-12 yr olds.  It is a touching story about a girl named Samantha, who finds some magic sunglasses which enables her to explore her dreams and her own specialties. These personal treasures she finds, then continues and develops without the use of the magic sunglasses. Making the readers intrigued to discover and cherish their own self worth.

For this message to reach as many children as possible Angela has devised a flexible interactive program to be used in schools and centre's everywhere. Her aim is to spread her ethos globally. Whether it is a mud hut in Africa, a club in New York, a public school at Eton or a youth club in Hackney, Angela will deliver an inspiring workshop to motivate the new generation. The Workshop allows the ethos of The Magic Sunglasses to effectively bring out the message of positivity and inspirations to more intimate groups. By visiting individual classrooms for 20 to 30 minutes at a time she can tailor each presentation to a specific age level and effectively interact with the children in a more intimate environment.

Before she pioneered her workshops Angela Buck asked herself the question; how can I empower children with my vision of self discovery and appreciating own values, to those who don't enjoy reading? How can I reach children who don't see reading as a form of entertainment? She was aware that some children are reluctant to read. Maybe because they don't enjoy it, or maybe they simply cannot read or just haven't been given the opportunity. To create a solution to her quandary she devised an audio version of the book and broadened her audience with this workshop. She now finds that all children, of all ages, of all walks of life, of those who love reading and those who don't, can now all enjoy and benefit from her concepts. Angela believes her innovative workshops offer varied attributes that develop the inspirations her book ignites from the first read.

Although the emphasis at the workshop will be on taking the ‘special value' concept out of the book and into life - looking at values, role models etc. The lively, interactive presentations focus on childhood self-esteem but they also holds other implements that are beneficial for children's development. Another fundamental aspect to Angela's objective is to offer communication, interaction and the development of social skills. Through her workshop the children are inspired to interact with other children and through their communicational progression their personal development also evolves.   Angela has derived activities that promote not only self exploration but the exploration of others.  The fact it is an interactive method means children can participate, thus improving confidence as well as knowledge of others. The children will subconsciously develop social skills, communication skills, body language, manners, etiquettes and the diversity within values, religions and ideals. They will also learn to be respectfully aware of others while the go through the journey of self-discovery and self-esteem. Angela Buck's book and her activities include insights, exercises and learning experiences that are geared to help children develop and deepen their understanding and appreciation of themselves as well as others.  Through conversation with peer group and adults on the workshop, the children will also deeper their understanding about the aspects within the book, more than they may do individually. Collectively analyzing it will offer new insights to the concepts and a consensus in views. This improves motivation and confidence to proceed with the factors discussed, within their own lives. This then implements a positive attitude and a pro-active manner after they leave the workshop.

Another aspect of her workshop is to promote reading within a child's lifestyle. The workshop encourages and provides interest in reading a book as not only self- exploration but also as an educational tool. Engaging children's attention to concentrate on the English Language and English Literature is of high importance to Angela Buck. Improving educational literature and intellect within children's learning is a fundamental aspect of Angela's ethos. The Magic Sunglasses can be used as an affiliation to the National Curriculum. She wishes to expand children's educations past the hours of schooling, with her interactive workshops that inspire fun and entertainment within an innovative environment. Although the importance is providing inspirational literature as an educational tool, the emphasis will be on having fun. Angela believes creative exploration and the freedom to use their imaginations will encourage aspirations and potentials. Through play and enjoyment a confidence will be built and dreams will be imagined. Think back to when you were a child. We can all remember playing with cardboard boxes and sheets, creating dens, cars, a house, a cave, or a castle. Technology has changed the way children are learning throughout the world. Computers are used in classrooms and teachers are using software programs to custom design a curriculum based on the needs of each particular child. One issue that is often overlooked until it is too late is whether or not mp3 audiobooks are a beneficial way for children to become knowledgeable in literature. r

Reading is a skill that everyone must have in order to survive in today's world. Classrooms throughout the world teach children the basics of reading and help introduce the children to a world of literature designed to broaden their minds. But are mp3 audiobooks the way to proceed? Are these audio books for children really helping children learn or are they an unnecessary crutch that can later hurt the child?

Mp3 audiobooks are sets of literature recorded onto a digital medium and then downloaded onto an mp3 player. These audio books can range from popular fiction to "how to" guides. The convenience is undeniable. Adults often lead very busy lives and want to stay abreast of current literature but find themselves without the time to sit down and read a book cover to cover. Mp3 audiobooks bridge this gap quite well.

The issue at hand is whether or not it is acceptable for children and teenagers to rely on this medium. Granted it is a great alternative to the portable DVD player but does it actually have any benefits?

The answer is yes and no. Mp3 audiobooks have several plusses. The first is for children just learning to read. All children will find themselves, at one point or another, struggling with a particular word in a story. By following the words while the voice reads them aloud, the child can identify what a particular word or phrase is. It is very much akin to the stories parents read to their children at night. Parents are another version of mp3 audiobooks.

The downside to mp3 audiobooks comes when they are used solely. It is important for a child or teenager to learn how to read and process the information properly. This is an acquired skill that comes from practice. If the child is listening to an audio book cd, cassette, or mp3 version exclusively then they are not acquiring this much needed life skill. They can find themselves knowledgeable about literature but ignorant of how to read it by themselves.

The effectiveness of mp3 audiobooks comes into question when a student is using the file as their sole means of learning. They may know what the story is about but they are not learning how the words come together. They may know what a word sounds like but would not recognize it. Studies have shown that seeing the words helps imprint them into the memory and hearing them may not.

Too much of one thing, even mp3 audiobooks, is not good for anyone. Students have to learn to read and understand literature. Some things, while great to hear, lose their effectiveness if they are not read. Take for example some forms of poetry. A person reads them on a sound file but the listener misses the physical impact of seeing the words take shape in stanzas or shapes. So you wind up with a student who can recite a poem but cannot read it properly.

Mp3 audiobooks have to be used in conjunction with physical reading. Without doing so then great harm is being done to a child. They are great tools to use on road trips but are not what is needed when studying for a class. The goal is to combine the two mediums in a way that increases understanding but also allows for the person to have to use their mind to process written information. As our technology increases, there will be other ways for books to be discovered. Some will be great and some might interfere with the natural learning order. As with anything, moderation is the key.

The answer, when it comes to mp3 audiobooks being used, is through moderation. There must be a balance. It is perfectly fine to listen to a book when you do not have the time to sit down and read it but you must not rely on this method alone. A perfect balance is one where the child can listen to a book when time does not permit actually reading it and actually knowing how to process the information.

Anything in done in excess can be harmful. This includes utilizing mp3 audiobooks as the sole means of acquiring new literature. If used properly audio books for children can get the child interested in the realms of literature and reading. It can make learning a fun experience. The child can listen to the book and still knows the importance of reading for themselves.

A child who reads becomes an adult who reads. Most adults who begin reading at an early age continue to learn by reading throughout their lives. Reading is more than a necessary skill - it's a source for learning, entertainment, enjoyment and comfort. The skill of reading can be one of the most valuable gifts that you give to your - or any - child.

Still, the question remains: How do you get children to read? There are so many distractions in today's world - television, cartoons, and video games, to name a few - that it may seem impossible to get your children to sit down and read, let alone turn them into reading enthusiasts. As a mother who has raised five avid readers, I can tell you that it's nowhere near as hard as you might think. Here are ten important tips for getting your children to read - and loving every minute of it.

1. Let them see you read.

I'll bet you thought that #1 would be "Read to them", didn't you? That's important (and it will get its own tip), but the single most important thing you can do to raise children who love reading is to be a reader. It doesn't matter if you read magazines, newspapers or books. What is vital is that your children, from an early age, see reading as a valuable and fun thing to do - and the best way to show them that is to read in front of them.

2. Read to your children regularly.

Bedtime stories are an enduring childhood ritual, but don't stop reading when your kids outgrow being tucked in at night. In our house, we made nightly reading a part of our evening - not at bedtime, but in the living room. Even when they reached their teens, my kids would often wander out into the living room to listen if I was reading to younger brothers and sisters.

3. Talk about what you read.

I am not suggesting that you should give your kids a reading comprehension quiz every time you read a story to them. Instead, get used to talking about the books that you read in casual conversation. Mention how excited you are that your favorite writer has just published a new book. Ask them how they think Ramona (or Harry Potter) would handle a situation. Remind them about scenes in stories that you read to them when you run into similar scenes in real life.

4. As soon as they're old enough, get them a library card.

Your public library is still the very best source of reading material. Take your kids to the library often. Hang out with them in the kids' room and let them choose their own books. Get them familiar with the librarian, and let them see other people enjoying books.

5. Make a big deal of their personal writing.

Writing gives kids an appreciation for the written word and deepens their enjoyment of reading. When children and teens start writing their own stories, they stop viewing books as something magical and unusual, out of their reach. If your children write, treat their writing as you would any other book. Buy them a journal. Help them create and bind their own books. Put their books on the bookshelf next to their bought books.

6. Subscribe to children's magazines.

Books are fun, but magazines offer a different kind of reading and engagement. Too often, even we adults only consider it "reading" if it's in a book. Magazines are colorful, topical and fun. Many children who consider reading a chore when the reading comes in book form will eagerly snatch their favorite magazine from the post box the moment it arrives and not put it down till they've read every last page.

7. Make books and magazines accessible - in every way.

Buy books and magazines for your kids as gifts. Make sure that there are books around the house in places that are easy for them to reach. Make sure, as well, that the books you choose are accessible - written for the right age level, and geared to their interests.

8. Institute family reading time.

When your kids start thinking they're too old for read-aloud, institute a family reading time. It can be as little as twenty minutes a day, or an hour two or three nights a week. The only rule is that everyone in the family participates - shut off the televisions and computers and everyone reads.

9. Show an interest in what they're reading.

The single most valuable reward for most kids is attention from their parents - so pay attention when your kids read. Notice it when they read a book that you remember. Ask them what the story is about. Talk to them about the books that they like.

10. Watch movies based on books - and then read the books together.

The other way around may work as well. Television and movies don't have to be the enemy. When you read Charlotte's Web, rent the video and watch it together - then talk about how well it captured the book. Or reverse the process - watch Harry Potter, then read the book together and talk about how much more depth there is in the book. Either way, you're fostering a critical eye and showing your children that behind every movie or television show is a writer and often, a book.
