Books have a world of their own, where they are able to envelope the thoughts of a child, within the pages of color and beauty. They are the simplest tools one can use to make a point to a child. They are easy to understand and are printed according to the ages of children and their development stage. They make great gifts, and are invaluable and carry no expiry date. They remain in families for generations to come, and appreciate in monetary terms, with the passing of time. Through these devices of knowledge, nature can be explained in all its essence and beauty.

Nature is something that cannot be defined, but only seen. It is that ultimate creation of God; one whole piece of landscape. Children first learn about nature from their very own garden or backyard. They see, they observe, and ask a lot of questions. It is not very easy to quell a child's interest and satisfy his or her hunger for information. Like, why is the sky blue? How does rain form? What is a cocoon? Why are the leaves mostly green? Why does the weather keep changing? What is thunder? As they keep growing older, their need for information grows, and this is where books come in handy - not only as tools of information, but as guides for children to develop a love for nature.

Books on nature were published to give accurate information, in the most colorful and innovative way possible. There are hardcover or paperbacks or in today's world - e-books available online. The older the child, the more he wants to know, so all these sources are available today, to quench his thirst for knowledge. Some children are so influenced and satisfied with books on nature, that this inspires them to become environmentalists, once they grow up. The foundation is laid by the nature of presentation within the books.

I personally, love going through books written on nature. They contain such a wide palette of color, and the information is put across in a very systematic and simple language, which is not only easy to understand but makes one's imagination run wild. They can actually create a mental picture of certain occurrences in nature. It makes it a very realistic picture for the reader.

Finally, I must say that books that tell of the wonders of nature should be encouraged. Books form a very crucial part of the child's relationship and understanding of nature. They are the windows by which the child is able to see the earth and all it entails, in a beautiful way. Children need to develop a love for nature books from a young age, and this responsibility lies entirely with the parents and elders.

Once picked up my son only put each of these books down upon completion. He returned repeatedly to each, especially the Do-It-Yourself volume. Whole heartedly recommend it for boys that enjoy humorous books. As a side note, stay far away from a book store [...]. They'll slip a monthly "club" fee of $9.95 onto your bill that appears separately from your invoice. They're counting on you not reading the small print on the left margin before they suck you into a riduclous monthly auto-debit fee. I'll never stray from Amazon for purchases again.

Good ideas, but written in an unclear manner

by Jay A. Jamieson MD from Oregon on 2010-08-12
I just read this book and found some good ideas I will try and implement this coming school year. However, the authors, for some reason have felt it necessary to rename simple ideas with more complicated, and often hard to recall language. For instance, procedures to reduce problem behaviors are called "practical reductive techniques" (basically punishment with a moral lesson) and the "compliance Matrix Program" is just bingo for good behavior. In one summary the authors mention the technique of "maximizing antecedents through precision request" and I really have no idea what they are talking about...unless I go back and find out that what they are really saying (I think): is stop problems before they happen by being specific about what you want. The title "The Tough Kid" is crystal clear; I only wish the rest of the book was as succinct.

The whole "Tough Kid" series is an invaluable tool for educators. Regular education teachers receive little to no training in classroom management, which makes the "Tough Kid" series even more necessary. Practical and applicable. The vendors listed here are about doubling the regular price, however. Buy it direct from Sopris West.

Poignant and Funny! A good read that boys will enjoy

by Pam Tee from on 2010-07-18
Middle School. I don't know of anyone who remembers that time of their life as being fabulous. It's so filled with change and coming to grips with the larger reality of looming adulthood, and the prospect of dealing with members of the opposite gender on 'new terms', and harder schoolwork, that it fairly dims in light of the fun of elementary school and high school. And perhaps that's why this book about an average boy trying to find his place resonates with kids. It was certainly popular with my children. Both of them brought it home as soon as they were able to read it themselves. The Word-of-Mouth of their peers having brought it to their attention. Myself, I didn't start reading the series until just recently when my 8 year-old son brought it home. He had already read it once and then we read it again together. The fact that he read it twice should tell you something: THIS isn't just another kid book. I was surprised at how funny the book was. There were times when I just cracked up and at least one time where I had to stop reading until I could pull myself together. THE SKINNY::: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" is written in clear, easy to understand language at the 5.2 (early Fifth Grade) Accelerated Reading level. Jeff Kinney is an observant and funny writer and the cartoon drawings add to the fun. The appeal of this book is from about 2nd Grade through 7th--although I thought it was great too. I want to HIGHLY recommend this series to parents of Boys and 'Reluctant Readers'. My observations --confirmed by teachers and librarians-- is that these books really appeal to kids. The drawings serving to break up the text into easily digestible units. Five Stars. " The Diary of a Wimpy Kid" is a book that grabs kids and brings them to the altar of literature Pam T~ busy mom and blogger

One of the classic Little Critter picture book titles by Mercer Mayer, this simple story shows our preschool hero resisting his father's efforts to get him ready for bed. By the end of the book Little Critter's understanding father has finally succeeded in moving his energetic, imaginative son through bathtime and pyjamatime into sleeptime.

Love it!

by M. Farris from on 2010-06-05
We love all the little critter books. They are always so colorful and fun to read. We also add a little more fun by trying to find the frog, spider and mouse on each page. In some of the books there is just the spider, in some it is just the mouse, and in others it is both. Sometimes there is a frog and a grasshopper too. They are hidden a lot of the time and it is fun to try to search them out. We especially love this one.

A bad message on every page

by Pensive Frog from Seattle, WA USA on 2010-04-21
I bought this book sight unseen, and boy, what a mistake. Every page has a bad message. The little boy monster plays with a toy gun, shoots aliens with a ray gun, attacks a boat, and there is violent imagery throughout. The dad yells at the boy, and then lets him eat cookies before bed. I realize I sound like a total prude, but there are plenty of books out there that don't focus on fighting and shooting. My husband wants to throw it away, but I think I can put stickers over the gun images and paste some better text over the violent passages. Before I stopped reading it to my daughter, I would change the words when reading it aloud - instead of using a ray gun to shoot the alien, he was "using his sensor to scan the alien". But that got tiresome. Anyway, there are plenty of ways to have an adventurous storyline that doesn't revolve around violence. I don't let my daughter play with toy guns, but I think I'm in the minority. And she's not a girly girl - her favorite toys are legos, cars, and oh yes, books.

Just Go To Bed is just OK

by Isabella E. Bertelli from Staten Island, NY on 2010-01-24
I'm a huge fan of Mercer Mayer's books and they are always a huge hit around the house except for this one. This was is about the little one doing just about anything not to go to bed by pretending to be and do various things, with the father just replying "Just go to bed", nothing more. I felt it was very outdated in that the father just barks orderes and no explainations or further communication. I guess I expected the book to have the parent explain or demonstrate in a crafty way why it is important for wee ones to rest or prepare for bedtime. Nothing of the sort here. This book is a dud in my opinion with so many missed opportunities to educate and amuse children and parents. You can find much better books out there to help with bed time rituals.

Best Book Series

by Brenda L. Merkle from Nazareth, PA United States on 2009-11-20
As a child my daughter always looked forward to me reading Little Critter books to her. Her first book was - Just Go To Bed - it was given to her for her 2nd birthday. I continue to send her the books when I see a new one and I know that she still enjoys them as much as ever (she is now 27 years old). She had them memorized but never grew tired of them. It is an absolutely wonderful series for children of all ages!

Great bed time story!

by Jules W. from TX on 2009-04-27
We purchased this book for our kids when they were young and have recently purchased a copy for our new grand baby. This is an excellent bed time story for kids who like to put off getting ready for bed and going to bed as long as possible. Great pictures and a fun story line! I don't think you can go wrong with any Mercer Mayer book.

Be careful what you say to the emotional one!

by pcgirl from on 2009-11-26
This is a great book. Fun and informative due to the fact *you* supply the info! The kids liked it until we got into a deep question like, "Who would you save from death, the newborn, teen who dropped from college or the grandmother with many grandkids?" Oh boy, my emotional daughter ran off and cried when a different question was asked by my husband, "Which child would you save?" I have a 1 yr old who had complications at birth and almost unanimously everyone said him. To which my dd cried and ran off... Bottom line: Preview questions before you ask them, considering age, maturity and emotionality of child asked! I learned my lesson...

The Kids' Book of Questions

by Anna M. Ligtenberg from Chicago on 2009-09-02
ISBN 0894806319 - There are going to be parents who find this book inappropriate because of some of the questions. I understand the concern, but feel the need to point out the book isn't aimed at toddlers - the audience is ages 9 to 12, an age group that is generally capable of thoughtful responses to hypothetical questions. And it's "hypothetical" that matters, here, as much as "thoughtful". This book poses 260 questions that range from funny to very serious. Under each question is enough space to write in an answer (at least if you don't have huge handwriting!). Many of the questions are thought-provoking enough to interest plenty of adults! There are questions here that are difficult to read, knowing that they're aimed at your children, but that's not a reason to avoid the book. If your goal is protect your child from those, maybe you'd want to pass this one up, but I'd encourage at least a second thought. By the time your child is the right age for this book, they've already been exposed to a lot that you've had no control over and been influenced by people you may never know - using this book might be a great way to learn about that exposure and those influences. Some of your child's answers, and even some of your own answers, might come as a surprise and I'm a fan of learning about your child whenever there's a chance. While the target audience is 9 to 12, I think the book might be a bigger hit with older kids, especially if they know that Mom and Dad won't be prying into their answers. - AnnaLovesBooks

Gives Kids Something To Write About

by K. Shah from on 2009-06-10
I gave this to my 9 year old son who needs to practice his handwriting everyday over the summer. Each day he uses one of the questions as his topic to write about. He thinks it is really interesting and fun. His friends have even picked up the book and started discussing their answeres to some of the questions. It is a perfect little book to get conversations and journal writing going.

great for speech therapy

by speechy from pa on 2009-01-12
I am a speech pathologist in the schools and I use this book all the time. My kids love it. The questions are engaging and its really a great way for kids to practice carryover of their speech sounds in conversation.

For supervised use only

by Megan from Boston, MA on 2008-09-06
I work with children in grades K - 6. There are a few questions in this collection from which teachers and parents could have thoughtful, meaningful conversations. Far too many, however, are disturbing. I would suggest another questions book, as they are a wonderful way to build connections with children and give them practice with higher level thinking and debate. If you choose this one , it should be as an adult tool used selectively, rather than a fun volume to add to a child's bookshelf.

I just forgot

by Nicole Wilson, Author of "Undressing Chickens" and "The Callie Gang". from Seattle, Wash., USA on 2010-04-02
Another Little Critter Book, and just as enjoyable as the other ones. Little Readers will be able to relate to Little Critter, who tries so very hard to do it all right, but seems to forget something all the time. The story is funny and entertaining. Kids will get the message that it is okay to sometimes forget something; it can happen to anyone. A great bedtime story or anytime story for small children. Fun read.

I Like It, But I Do Have One Little Complaint

by Mark K. Wickersham from Tianjin, China on 2010-02-20
I decided to read this book to my girls because they tend to be forgetful. It's a cute story showing a kid (actually a little critter) who remembers to do some things, but forgets to do other things. I like how the story shows a young child doing chores around the house. Sometimes my girls don't want to help out the family, and this book shows that there are children who have jobs just like them. I also like how the mother expresses a variety of emotions when reminding her child what he needs to do. At times it is clear that she is disappointed, but at other times she is very gracious and encouraging to her child. The story has a nice ending when the boy expresses that he never forgets to have his mom read him a bedtime story and give her a goodnight kiss. My only complaint is that the father has an almost nonexistent role in the family. The only time he is introduced in the story is when he comes home from work; he is sitting down waiting for the newspaper. Way to interact with the family dad! Perhaps the other Little Critter books do a better job showing dad in a more positive light.

Yeah, we have a lot of work to do. Brian Thornton has done every expat American mom a favor by actually making learning such things fun. In The Everything Kids' States Book, we've learned the oddest trivia (the majority of limestone used in US buildings stems from southern Indiana) with at-a-glance descriptions of Everything you've ever wanted to know and then some. The Everything Kids' Joke Book: Side-Splitting, Rib-Tickling Fun (Everything Kids Series) I don't know what to say. These are really silly jokes. Some are over the head of my 4 year old. He had been trying to make up his own (not even funny) jokes and I thought this book would help. But he wasn't really ready for it. We'll keep it til he gets a bit older. They are silly and not funny to a grown up but for kids they are probably right on if you have the right age.
