Children Books: Entertain and Educate the Little Ones

Good books are the great friends of every children. Books are considered as a valuable resource, as they keep the readers and listeners aware about different stories and facts. They play a vital role of a guide and a teacher, and entertain & enlighten the readers from time to time. As per the interest of the readers, one can opt for his or her desired books. The market is flooded with the books ranging from fiction and non-fiction to children's books. These books are written keeping the various aspects in mind related to life and fantasy.

Children's Books , as the name specifies are meant for children. They focus on two concepts, namely - entertainment and education. In order to make a specific concept easier and effective in these special categories of books, the writers use attractive fonts with great illustrations. As a matter of fact, the lessons have to be taught and presented in an exciting and interactive manner, so that kids do not loose their interest in-between the lessons. With the interesting characters and wonderful plots, the kids can grab the things, quite easily. Therefore, it can be said that little ones find it interesting to read books with brilliant pictures and smooth graphics.

To serve this purpose children's books are written very cautiously by considering their interests and likings in mind. These books cover topics on various subjects such as rhymes, exciting stories, fables of fantasy and much more. Moreover, the basic books on alphabets, numerals or different parts of body come with various pictures and patterns, which make them all the more interesting. Furthermore, the books for little ones can be classified into various categories such as early age books, traditional story books, fiction story books, informational or books based on specific subjects.

Some of the best books from the children's collections include nursery rhymes, Harry Potter, the Chamber of Secrets, the Princess of Azkaban and many more. To add more, the Huckleberry Finn, Alice in Wonderland and The Jungle Book are best selling children books that have appealed to the children since ages. It can be said that the story books that reveal the interesting and fantasy tales are the ones that are very popular amongst the kids.

675 wondrous pages

by M. Feldman from Bowdoin, Maine, USA on 2009-10-11
Reading A.S. Byatt's "The Children's Book" is much like reading a 19th century novel; you read it the way you lose yourself in a densely plotted story by Trollope or Hardy. The first three sections ("Beginnings, "The Age of Gold," "The Age of Silver") span the period from around 1895 to just before World War I, from the end of Victoria's reign through the Edwardian era. The shorter last section ("The Age of Lead") includes the war itself, although from the moment the novel opens you know, just by looking at the birth dates, that all the boys growing into young men will come to suffer terribly. "The Children's Book" is historical fiction, and many real life characters pass through its pages, including Oscar Wilde, Emma Goldman, and G.B. Shaw. One of the central characters, the children's writer Olive Wellwood, whose idyllic home "Todefright" is where much of the "Age of Gold" is set, is based (according to an interview Byatt gave to "New York Times" reporter Charles McGrath) on the writer E. Nesbit, and other characters are also loosely based on real lives. However, it is not just the characters that make this novel compelling. Byatt wants you to feel how different this time period is from our own, although it's hardly distant. Olive's children run free through a kind of children's paradise. Their elders attend earnest lectures on the "Woman Question" and on the plight of the poor. Time moves slowly, before the invention of the motorcar. Female dress (described in lush detail by Byatt) dazzles, even as it conceals the ankles. Literature for children becomes an art form. Byatt's attention to detail is astonishing: the world of pottery, the world of folklore, the worldview of the Fabians. At the same time, glimmers of the twentieth century worlds to come are visible in this novel: the concentration camps of the Boer War; anarchism and socialism; suffrage; Freud and the unconscious; new ideas about sexuality. Olive's daughter Dorothy pushes through one obstacle after another to become a physician; her cousin Griselda seeks out the attenuated university education, with its absurd and rigid social rules, that is the only form of higher learning available to her; her brother Charles/Karl is drawn to radical politics. Many reviews, including published ones, have mentioned the book's length. By that standard, if Dickens were alive, he'd have to re-invent himself as a blogger in order to be read at all. Another concern seems to be the novel's prodigious presentation of information on everything from pottery glazes to the Grande Exposition Universelle de Paris. I'd argue that it's all that information that allows you to feel, as a reader, transported--truly transported-- to a different time. When you put down these densely packed pages, you feel like you've inhabited the same space as the characters, at least for a bit. Thus, to read "The Children's Book" is to be carried off into a world that is unfamiliar, a complicated world that looks backward to a pre-industrial world of beautiful pots and glazes, of secret treehouses and marionettes, even as it looks forward to new lives for women and the poor and to a different understanding of sexuality. In Byatt's telling, the years of "The Children's Book" seem like a kind of dress rehearsal for the twentieth century. Opening night, however, takes place on the Somme.

A small personal perspective

by Brendan Moody from Augusta, ME, USA on 2009-10-13
When I thought about reviewing The Children's Book I figured I'd take an intellectual tack, address the common complaint about excessive period detail in terms of Byatt's literary intentions and modern expectations about the scope of the novel. But other people have made those points, as well as I could have and probably better. So I'm going to do something different. The back-and-forth in other reviews on Byatt's use of detail may create the impression that, for better or for worse, this will be a difficult book, the sort of thing that feels like work even for those who appreciate its intentions and admire its depth. For some readers this will of course be true. But others will have an experience like mine: loving The Children's Book for pure pleasure of reading, flying through 425 pages in a single day, staying up until 5:00 AM to finish the book and feeling emotionally devastated in the best possible way afterward. The historical detail was part of this. One might get the impression from some of the reviews that Byatt just throws random facts in to show off that she's done a lot of research. In fact the detail, while extensive, is shaped by Byatt so that it both reveals the aspects of life in that era that interest her and works as literature. I haven't read enough novels with such ambition; it is, perhaps, out of vogue at present. The characters are fascinating too. I fully respect that the novel's digressive structure makes it difficult for many readers to connect emotionally to the characters' dramas. I had no such trouble. I felt like their stories were worth waiting for, and that a greater superficial tightness of construction would damage their plausibility and undermine the sense of constant incipience that defines the lives of some children and young adults. It is this sense of the reality of the characters' lives that makes their encounter with the brutality of World War I all the more devastating. The thing with novels about war is that their characters are in some sense created to die-- it's hard to create a full sense of who they were and what they wanted from life before the war came. The sudden outbreak of the conflict fifty pages from the end of this 675 page book gives the war a shadow (what more can literature ever give) of its historical terror. I see that these rambling remarks don't add up to much of a review. I hope they'll help someone nonetheless. Here's one more: in response to an interview question on how she wished to be read, Byatt observed in a general context that "Readers should be empowered to skip." If you're thinking about reading The Children's Book but are worried about its length or level of detail, take the plunge. If something bores you, skip it. It's better to read and enjoy part of a book than to fail to read all of it. I think Publishers Weekly was a bit silly in saying "Buried somewhere in here is a fine novel," but if you find you share that impression, feel free to dig around for it.

This Book in Students' Hands

by Nancy Tolson from Belchertown, MA on 2010-04-26
It is so important for college students that are majoring in education to get their hands on good teaching material on children's literature. Children's Books in Children's Hands is a fantastic piece to have in their educational tool box. Children's books that are current, great teaching suggestions and even though there is a chapter on diversity, this book displays diverse books throughout. And BRAVO to the authors on "Chapter 5: International Literature" for not putting this as an aside topic, adding it on at the back of the textbook OR including it with "multicultural books". International books should stand alone to be recognized and appreciated. Perhaps this will help the readers of this book not to be afraid to teach them. The resources are rich along with the "recommended books" lists. "Myeducationkit" is something that I pray will enrich my students knowledge on children's books forever! I look forward to co-teaching with this book and having my students get their hands on it. It may be a little costly but it is an investment that can be used once they leave my classroom and enter their own.

Children's Literature for Adults

by from Traverse City, MI USA on 2001-05-02
This book offers indepth information about a variety of topics concerning childrens literature. In the first chapters it focuses on the development of children and their perceptions of literature at different ages. It then informs the reader about the historical development of children's literature. The biggest part of the book, however, is about the different genres of literature available. What I liked about this book was that it offered many examples and reading samples. It also included several essays from children book authors who wrote about their profession. The teaching aids and the recommended reading at the end of each chapter proved helpful. However, some areas of this book, such as this one, are only helpful to people interested in child education as a profession.

This will be my second copy!

by Ask Moxie from New York, NY United States on 2003-08-19
My son (17.5 months) loves this book so much he's completely worn it out. We've taped it with clear packing tape several times, but by now even the tape that's taping the tape needs to be retaped, so it's time for a new copy. This is his stroller book--he *must* read this book while riding in the stroller, pointing at all the pictures and exclaiming "truck!" over and over again. Or turning to the fire truck and making a siren noise, or saying "pickle!" at the pickle car.*I* love this book because it's just silly. It puts real-life vehicles (like fire engines) and puts them on the page next to vehicles that don't exist (like a peanut car). This is such a must-have book, especially for toddlers obsessed with vehicles. If your child is one of them, then definitely get this book (and Byron Barton's _Trucks_, too).

My son is mezmorized by the this book.

by Laura from NJ on 2000-01-12
My 20 month old son has been mezmorized by this book for months now. Typically a book will hold his interest for 5 or 10 minutes at a time. My son can never seem to put this book down. It is ideal for long car trips, traffic jams or fussy days. There is a lot going on in the book so he never seems to get bored.

Mayer has brought out the joy in children's books!

by Kim Schmitt from Quincy, Illinois on 1999-12-01
Mercer Mayer has created another wonderful book in the Little Critter series. He has an uncanny ability to connect with children on their level. This book has wonderfully bright pictures that reach out and grab the child's attention. It will bring a smile to your face as you learn that it is okay to forget, because every child forgets sometimes.

Cute Book, Realistic Situations

by M. Allen Greenbaum from California on 2004-12-23
In the beginning of Mayer's book, our hero looks straight at the reader, slightly lifts both arms, and states: "Sometimes I remember, sometimes I just forget." For example he (or she?-it's difficult to tell the gender in this "Little Critter" book) puts his dishes in the sink, but forgets to put away the milk. Humorous twists on the `I remembered this, but forgot this' motif lift this book above the ordinary. For example: "I didn't forget to feed the goldfish, he just didn't look hungry," and, after a bath, "I didn't use soap, but I didn't forget to. I just don't like to." His mother is alternately tired, frustrated, and amused, and the clever story ends on a warm note. This is a sweet and simple story that manages to cover many familiar situations with honesty and empathy for all involved. Watch for the little mouse friend on every page!

Lots of "hidden" value

by Nicki Heskin from Southern California on 2008-09-29
At first glance, this book appears to be simply an illustration of a kids song. Some reviewers have complained that that's all there is..so why buy it. But actually, there is a lot more there if you look. First of all, while illustrated songs seem like an odd choice sometimes to adults, little kids LOVE them. Invariably, they are the ones my two year old brings to me again and again. They are also the first books that kids are able to memorize. This is important because they like to pull them out when they are playing independently, and model reading on their own. What a satisfying experience for a pre-reader! Plus, for parents for whom it doesn't come as naturally to bring music into their children's lives, these sorts of books are a great way to do so. This book does an excellent job of being really clear with the pictures lining up the words and the body parts. The first line, she gives each body part it's very own page, so that they can be large and really obvious -- the little animal on the page mirroring the same body part as the baby is also very adorable. When she gets to eyes, ears, mouth and nose, she adds another dimension by putting in item on the page that you can do with that body part -- for eyes - books, for ears - baby instruments, for mouth - baby food and sippy cup, and for nose - flowers. So there is a discussion element if you are reading this with your baby and choose to take it. The back of the book has the last "knees and toes" echo...pretty cute, and also has the whole song written out under a staff with musical notes. My older daughter has taken to grabbing this 'baby' book and asking how to pluck it out on her little piano keyboard. So the book can have a second life for that purpose later on. The pictures of the babies are endearing.. I love their happy little faces. It is worth noting that while the babies are definitely different "shades" -- it's hardly what I'd call multi-cultural, which is a shame because there's no reason why it couldn't have been. She did throw in a couple girls. All and all, if the multicultural issue doesn't concern you, I'd recommend this highly for your own little on, or for a gift.

Classic song

by K. Creek from Potland, OR USA on 2007-04-30
My husband and I were trying to teach out daughter where her eyes, nose, mouth etc were. My husband has never heard this song so it was hard for him to do with our daughter. I found this book and now this is daddy's book to read. within a week our daughter knows where her body parts are and how to say and she loves reading it with her dad. I would recommend this book.

Is there any children books that can explain a 9 year old how to take care of herself?

I have a 9 year old step-daughter.... I've tried explaning to her about taking care of herself like putting on deodarant, wiping everytime she goes to the bathroom. I know she's young and I have to remind her sometimes and I do, but I feel like a bad person thinking that I'm getting on her nerves. I just try to teach her respect for herself and having morals. She loves to read , so is there ANY books for her to read helping her to understand what she needs to do.
just to let you all know..... her real mom doesn't care to much about herself or her daughter so that doesn't help.... and I've taught her the consiquences, I've tried everything!

Yes, there is a little girl book that has ALL that stuff in it. I saw it at KMart, but I cannot remember what it was called. I'll try to look it up. Be right back.

"The Care And Keeping Of You". I actually looked through it and it looked really good for young girls.

Baby Board
What's the point of 'Baby on Board' signs in cars? Surely we should drive safely all the time?

In todays view, they are more of a novelty gift given to new parents.

From what I've heard concerning their origin (and from the PR and advertising when they first became available in the US) is that someone took the concept of the "Tot Finder" stickers offered by the fire depts back in the 1970's for parents to place on their child's bedroom window so in the event of a fire, the fire fighters would know that bedroom was a child's room. Then whenever rescue personnel sees the "Baby/Child On Board" in the window of a car, they knew to look for an infant or small child in the wreckage.

If an infant or child is not in the car, then it should be removed during that time. This can cause unnecessary endangerment to rescue personnel on a wreck scene taking the additional time looking for an infant/child when all along, they were taken to the babysitter by the other parent that day in their car.

Loved by my 10 Month Old

by A. E. Berigtold from Baltimore, MD on 2008-02-18
We bought this book when my daughter was 4 months old, but it is only recently that she started picking it out for me to read to her. She laughs at the different baby faces, especially the boy sticking his tongue out, and it is one book that she wants to look at over and over. I love how diverse the book is, and the message is great. It would be a nice book for those doing an international adoption. Two pacifiers up!

This is a book you MUST have!

by K. Agee from Mt. Juliet, TN United States on 2000-04-07
We got this book for our 4 year old daughter when she was 2, and it became her all-time favorite book. It helped her to increase her speech by saying fun things. We then introduced it to our 2nd daughter when she was 20 months old, and she also adores this book and it is the one she always gets every night and says "book" to have it read. We only say the first part of each page (i.e., "The pigs say...") and she always finishes the second part (i.e., "LaLaLa"). This is an absolute must have along with "But Not The Hippopotamus" by Boynton. These are GREAT gifts for baby showers or 1st birthdays. If you are considering ordering this - Go ahead and do it now! You WON'T be sorry that you did!

No, No, That's All Wrong!

by M. Allen Greenbaum from California on 2005-05-23
Shakespeare knew it, and parents and other adults know it: People love a comedy of errors. Perhaps the most delighted audience is the youngest; toddlers love hearing mistakes and correcting them. It's a surefire hit for their certain sense of humor, and Sandra Boynton exploits this beautifully in this small board book. Just a few set-up lines and Boynton is ready for the book's main joke: "A cow says MOO." "A sheep says BAA." "Three singing pigs say LA LA LA!" "'No, no!' you say, 'that isn't right. The pigs say OINK all day and night.'" Practice your dramatic abilities and really ham it up (pun intended) when you read the singing pigs and "that isn't right" lines on pages 3 and 4. There's also some action (dogs chasing cats), and a nice quizzical conclusion: ("It's quiet now. What do you [underlined] say?") Boynton's familiar style is whimsical and slightly tongue-in-cheek. Her animals have very expressive, human-looking emotions, conveyed mostly through the eyes. For example, a quacking duck and a neighing horse aren't intrinsically very interesting, but when they're facing each other with similarly baffled faces, there's a subtle humor. The singing pigs, by the way, are anything but subtle. They're pizzazed out in coordinating striped pants, solid sports coats, and elegant white bow ties. They excited pigs dance in unison and hold canes in a showy vaudeville style. For a short and simple board book aimed at the very young, this is lots of fun. For older toddlers, take a look at Boynton's counting book with a difference: "Hippos Go Berserk!" She knows and loves her animals, and so will your little one.

Absolutely adorable photos of a cat, puppy, tiger cub, baby monkey, zebra, elephant, penguin, butterfly, fish, starfish, bunny, etc. all entice little fingers to experience textures and to hear first words associated with them. What a fun and clever learning experience! Even the book's padded cover adds to the sensory delights. I can't imagine a cuter first book about animal friends to entice babies to explore the world around them. Great little book!

3 month old likes it lots

My 12-week-old daughter loves this book. The bright colors and photographs of animals catch her attention when I put her in the playyard for a nap, and she looks at the book until she falls asleep. She's just learning to grasp things now and often grabs the book, although the touch and feel parts are a little beyond her at the moment. A friend of mine told me her daughter really liked books with photographs more than illustrations, and my girl seems to like photographs more, too. I really like all the DK books, and I'm not surprised their touch and feel books are some of the best board books out there for infants.

A beautiful first animal photography book!!!

by A. Moore from Bay Area,CA USA on 2005-02-03
My son received this book for his first birthday and it has quickly become a favorite. He still chooses this book regularly at storytime and he is now 18 months old. Reasons to buy this book include... 1. Great book for language development. The animals are sorted into groups including Baby Animals, Pets, On the Farm, Birds, and At the Zoo. A great book for playing "Where's the..." and "What's that?" pointing games. 2. Clear, beautiful photos. Each animal photograph is also placed against a solid colored background so that the image really stands out. 3. Unlike other animal photography books, the pages are not an animal collage with all the animals mixed in together. Each animal is shown in a square or rectangle with the name of the animals printed in lowercase underneath. Babies and Young toddlers are often confused by jumbled images and prefer the simplicity of how the animals are presented in this book. 4. The book also has a rhyming, interactive text. For example on the zoo page it says, "I'm hard to see when I'm out in the snow. Who am I? (polar bear) I carry a trunk wherever I go. Who am I? (elephant). My toddler, like most, is highly attracted to rhyming text.

One of the best Animal books

by jiandmoy from San Francisco, CA on 2003-12-31
I got this for my one year old twins, and they simply love it! They enjoy looking at the bright and colorful photographs of all the animals and this book enables me to make it a fun way of teaching them what different animals look like and the sounds they make. One of my twins always wails when I am finished and I close the book -- she simply wants to look at the book some more! I highly recommend this book for parents with young children.

It's the same in both Swedish and English.
"film" - British English "film" or in American English "movie" that's the only thing that can be different.

A Bridge Over Changing Times

by Giordano Bruno from Wherever I am, I am. on 2008-04-18
My own son is nearly out of high school and will no longer sit on my lap to let me read to him. Imagine! The rascal! But I have two boys, children of my cousin, and a niece, who are beginning to appreciate my reading talents. Their mothers have not been slow to recognize my utility on that front. Astrid Lindgren was famous in America, years ago, for her Pippi Longstocking books. I think those are still common in bookstores. As an ex-boy reading to a boy, I enjoyed Lindgren's Rasmus books much more, and I loved the "Noisy Village" series. Lindgren's children's books are deliciously old-fashioned and rustic. Rasmus is the Huckleberry Finn of Sweden, and the five children of Noisy Village might remind English readers of Tom Sawyer and Little Women melded together. I read all these books in Swedish, and I'm just becoming acquainted with them in English for my young relatives. The translation is good - not quite as idiomatically piquant as the original, but attractively brash and blunt. Boys will enjoy the stories as much as girls. The target age for hearing these stories is about four to six, and quick-to-read children will be able to handle them at seven. Life in a village in oldtime Sweden was little different from life in rural areas of the Upper Midwest before TV. Parents also may feel the pull of that good-natured, fundamentally decent community. There are no tickets to the past, however, except in books.

Best book that was ever written.

This is Nils (16) from Germany. I read this book several times. It's so wonderful. When I was 4 or 5 my sister read me the book for the first time and I think that it formed my life. It' just great. And I am just reading it again and think that I will do it again and again.

A masterpiece

by Britt Arnhild Lindland from Norway on 2002-03-05
Astrid Lindgren has written so many fantastic books, it is impossible to name them all. But Ronia, the Robber's Daughter is among the best ones.Ronia is born among a clan of robbers, and grows up surronded by love. But as she grows up she will discover that her small world is threatened from the outside. We are taken into a tale of strong friendship and love, a world where you are strong only because people love you, and you love other people. This is not a sweet love story, but a story where every child and grown up can learn important things about life. About forgiveness. About fright. And most of all about love.Ronia, and her friend Birk are strong children. But at the same time they can cry and they can show their weakness. Lindgren is a master in showing the whole specter of human feelings. And it is very easy to believe in her characters, believe that they are real, cause they show real human feelings. Many children must go through hard times, and feelings can be almost impossible to talk about. Lindgren's books are of great help. And best and most important of all, Ronia is a book about love, love as the strongest feeling. With love you can overcome.Britt Arnhild Lindland

A Childeren's Classic!

by from on 1999-08-02
The last time I read this book was when I was nine, but the images have stayed with me all this time. I got my copy of RONIA a couple of days ago from Amazon.com, and it is better than I remembered. The aching loving relationship between parents and children, and the pain of making choices that come against that (called 'growing up') is beautifully brought out in this brilliant tale, set against a landscape of a forest with dark stands of trees, populated by beasts of the earth, and harpies and dwarves, and a lighting-riven castle. Although not quite so explicit, it is a Romeo and Juliet type story, with the charm and appeal of innocence. Ronia is a headstrong heroine who will capture your imagination instantly!

Delightful world of Astrid Lindgren

by Poetry lover from Toronto, Canada on 2010-08-08
This book is such a fun read that any book lover, not only a child, would enjoy it. Written by the great Astrid Lindgren, it is part of a series and we have them all. The character of Emil, drawn from somebody the author obviously once knew, is wonderfully vivid and embodies the essence of childhood, where everyday events are easily turned into exciting adventures, feeding an independent spirit while never denying it the nurturing and protection that only loving bonds of family can provide.

How Comforting to Know the Tomten is On His Rounds

by Terrie from Little Chute, WI USA on 2001-11-26
I have loved this book for over 40 years. The copy I have was printed in Sweden a long time ago but I am very glad that this story is available as a nicely affordable paperback because it's such a sweet and comforting tale that lots of children will love. The beautiful illustrations capture perfectly the crisp, cold, snowy atmosphere of a still winter's night as the Tomten, a small spirit and guardian of a humble farm homestead goes about on his secret rounds doing his caretaker duties in his gentle, loving way. He whispers encouragment to the sleeping animals and children. He has seen many hundreds of winters and so he knows that "winters come and winters go, summers come and summers go" and the wheel of the year turns on and on. I encourage you to read this to children to help them feel safe and cozy and snug in their beds on a cold, dark winter's night...maybe try it this Winter Solstice and be sure to keep a look-out for tiny footprints in the snow around your home.

SUPERB & COMFORTING Memories

by Timothy Hall from Fort Bragg, NC on 2002-01-28
The Tomten was my first and favorite childhood book. Today, I read it to my daughter as her bedtime story. It is her favorite book also. This book is the perfect comforting bedtime story for children of all ages. The author magically weaves fantasy and security into the story of The Tomten. Reading The Tomten gives you that "safe in the bed between your parents" feeling we all remember. The author, Austrid Lindgren, passed away today. The world has lost a timeless treasure. Thank you Mrs. Lindgren. You will be missed by generations.
